Whipperley Infant Academy ‘Learning, Growing, Together’

Foundation Subjects

Computing

We recognise the importance of Computing because we are all very aware that this is a central life skill which our pupils will need not only throughout their education but also in their future careers.

Computing is not confined to stand alone lessons but is linked into our topic based curriculum. We have invested heavily in Apple iPads and staff training to ensure our pupils gain a varied skills base to ensure they can apply their knowledge in different ways.

Geography and History

Through Geography and History we aim to help the children understand the world in which they live in the context of both the past and the present. Both of these subjects are taught through our topics and themes so that the children cover a wide but relevant and balanced curriculum.

We aim to balance the teaching of key geographical skills and developing knowledge and understanding of the word. This is done by comparing and contrasting different locations, investigating change using key vocabulary and asking/ responding to key questions. The children are, also, taught to appreciate and care for their environment and are made aware of issues of global concern

We understand the need for children to explore and investigate the world around them and this starts with our school and our local environment.

We encourage our children to learn about Ancient and Modern History through role play, mini projects, reading and trips to living museums and different places. As with Geography learning about the past and how it has impacted the present is done through our book based curriculum.

We understand that children need to have a firm understanding of chronology (times and dates) as well as the ability to explore using enquiry skills.

Physical Education:

  1. see physical education as an essential part of the curriculum and all children are encouraged to participate for enjoyment and personal well-being. We are very fortunate to have an experienced and highly skilled Specialist Sports Coach and we can offer additional opportunities for our children to experience a breadth of sport including: trampolining, karate, cricket, tennis and multi skills. We also take part in inter school programme of competitive events.

Our annual Sports Day is held in the summer term and is very well supported by our families.

Design and Technology:

Design and Technology involve the children in planning, designing, making and evaluating models and products. Many of the activities arise out of the topics being studied and are carried out through group work which enables the children to discuss and solve problems collaboratively.

Music:

Children are given every opportunity to develop their musical appreciation and talents through our rich topic based work. They are involved in regular singing assemblies and we offer opportunities to share musical experiences singing together and performing at events. Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music.

Art:

We encourage our pupils through art to stimulate creativity and imagination. Our topics provide opportunities for visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. This enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes. Children learn to review their work and become confident to make changes in order to improve and develop their ideas. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers.

The appreciation and enjoyment of the children’s work is valued in displays in classrooms and around the school.
